CITY CHURCH HISTORY
In 2006, Chad and Amanda Jacobson, along with Arni and Jan
Jacobson, Josh and Brooke Pierce, and a few other core families, moved from Green Bay, WI
to Salt Lake City to implement the vision that had been on Chad and Amanda’s
hearts for years. The vision for Salt Lake City was not just to plant a church,
but to plant an city-impacting, city-influencing church that would thrive in the greatest mission field in America. City Church launched with its purpose to Create, Connect, and Care. (see the Purpose of City Church )
The new adventure began on March 4th, 2007 with 61 people -- most of which were family and friends who had flown in to support Launch Sunday. The numbers quickly evened out to around 40 people that were a part of the first City Church congregation. During the first year of City Church, we met at
one of the Salt Lake Community College campuses. Each Sunday morning the team had to
set up and tear down every area of the church, from the sound system to the children's
classrooms. The church steadily grew to around 90 people, so we began fundraising and
planning for a new, more permanent church home.
In August of 2008, we signed a lease
on an old budget movie theater in Sandy - the old Starship Theatres. Over the next few months, the church worked
day and night to renovate the building – literally from the ground up. After all
of the time and energy that was put into the renovation, City Church had a Dedication Sunday on November 2, 2008 to celebrate our new church home.
Over the last 2+ years, the church has quadrupled in size and we have seen so many people come to know Christ and be baptized! There are 3 Sunday morning services to choose from now -- and Connect Groups and Going Deeper classes to be a part of during the week.
City Church has always been and will always be a family-focused
church. Even as an early start-up church, it has been our mission to provide
incredible, Biblical teaching for every age. Now, 4 years into the church, we
offer a wide array of connect groups, studies, and ministries designed to bring
people closer to each other and to God. Since we hold high importance on
creating, caring, and connecting, we are continually designing new areas of
involvement with you in mind. Sunday mornings, in conjunction with other
ministries during the week, is intended specifically for you and your family.
As with any church or ministry, we have seen our share of
challenges, changes, and difficulties, along with huge wins and exciting feats.
Through it all, we have seen God’s hand in it from the beginning. We fully rely
on the word of God, “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in
you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus” (Philippians
1:6). We are so eager to see where God is going to lead us over the upcoming
years, and we invite you to be a part of it, because it will be great!
